Some Thing Else
For our tenth film we wanted to do something special. So all we did was capture our deepest powder ever, expeditions to the most remote mountain ranges, and the steepest spines on the planet. Combined with the most interesting characters on snow, and our usual low brow humor, and we have a ski movie worthy of our ten years filming the backcountry experience. Part ski porn, part documentary, this is a full on propaganda piece promoting the joys and wonder of exploring winter on skis and split-board. It’s our business and pleasure to break trail with those who are willing to put in the time, education and respect the mountains deserve and record it for posterity. This year we headed out looking for Some Thing Else, and we found it. -A last minute dream trip to Hokkaido, Japan with Eric Balken, Will Cardamone, Megan Michelson and Dan Abrams -A yurt stay in The Beartooth Mountains of Montana with Carston Oliver, Eric Balken, Ben Nobel and Alyssa Larson -Steep spine clinic with Neil Provo in the Tordrillo Mountains of Alaska -Phat Camp with Andrew McLean, Thomas Gaisbacher and Noah Howell in the Wrangell St Elias National Park and Preserve -Paul Kimbrough in the mighty Tetons crusading to resuscitate telemark skiing -Snowy Mountain Lodge in British Columbia hosts JP Auclair, Kalen Thorien, Ian Provo and Riley Leboe -A look into the mind and the turns of Freeride World Tour Champion Drew Tabke -Geoff McAndrews shows us the ups and downs of his world in the Salt River Range of Wyoming -Carston Oliver and happy fun times jumping crevasses in Alaska
Powderwhore: Elevation
The backcountry is the imagination unleashed and you get out what you put in. There are real boundaries and limitations though; avalanches, exposure to the elements, conditions and fatigue all challenge one to grow in knowledge, patience and fitness. The joy comes in discovering these limitations, moving through fear and exploring beyond. Putting in the perspiration and inspiration leads to ELEVATION. This movie is part ski porn, part documentary and a full on propaganda piece promoting the joys and wonder of exploring on skis and split-board. What we lack in flashy graphics, hi-tech camera gear and helicopter budgets, we make up for with try-hard. Capturing wild mountains and those willing to put in the time, education, respect and energy that they demand is our pleasure. Enjoy! Holden Village, a peaceful Lutheran Retreat deep in the Cascades, hosts Michele Manning and a wayward band of skiers who discover its powdery blessings from above. The Dorais brothers, Jason and Andy, attempt speed skiing records on the Grand Teton and Mount Rainier. Andrew McLean explores true expedition life in the Ruth Gorge of Alaska. Returning to health, Noah Howell reveals the depths of his season. Jake Sakson and Paul Kimbrough clean house in their backyard range, the Tetons of Wyoming. Will Cardamone and Charlie Cannon hole up for turns in a hut deep in Oregon’s Wallowa Mountains. Bob Athey offers up crusty bits of wisdom gathered from decades of being bitter in the backcountry. Cindi-Lou and Zach Grant build the cabin of their dreams in the heart of the Wasatch Mtns. The Provo brothers, Neil and Ian, reign supreme in the Tordrillo Mountains proving once again that Alaska is the undisputed king of big lines and deep powder.
Breaking Trail
In 2011 Utah’s Wasatch Mountains and most of North America experienced a record breaking doozie, making our never ending mission to flatten as many snowflakes as possible almost easy. We estimate the number of crystals crushed to be somewhere in the trillions. If you’ve had the extreme pleasure of viewing one of our previous films, then the obscene display of exploding snow will be nothing new. On closer inspection you will notice that Powderwhore is no longer focusing primarily on the telemark turn. BREAKING TRAIL will highlight riders of all disciplines choosing their own backcountry adventures. Warning! There are no shots of helicopters filming other helicopters or hankie-clad 16-year-olds hepped up on energy drinks spinning to rap music. And you won’t win a Jeep if you come out to a premiere. You will find a mixed bag of highly talented and dedicated individuals who enjoy hiking out into the unknown in search of turns and adventure. All this captured by two video hacks carrying as little as necessary in order to travel fast and light.
