‘Den franske forbindelsen' starter i 1975 i Marseille. Pierre Michel (Jean Dujardin) er politidommer og har nettopp flyttet til byen sammen med sin kone og barn, når han blir utnevnt til leder av etterforskningen av organisert kriminalitet. Den kriminelle miljøet i havnebyen blir tøft kontrollert av mafiabossen Gaetan 'Tany' Zampa (Gilles Lellouche), som har både myndighetene og kriminelle forbindelser i et jerngrep. Han regnes som nesten uangripelig, men Pierre er fast bestemt på å få has på ham. Hovedrollen Pierre Michel blir spilt av Jean Dujardin, som fikk sitt store gjennombrudd i Michel Hazanavicius' ‘The Artist’, en film han vant både Oscar og Golden Globe for. Sist vi så ham i George Clooneys 'The Momuments Men'. Gilles Lellouche spilte også sammen med Dujardin i Guillaume Canets ‘Små hvite løgner', og har senest spilt med Vincent Lindon i Fred Cavayés effektive thriller 'Mea Culpa'.
