Vi følger hushjelpen Jane Fairchild gjennom en dag i 1924. Jane har fri mens arbeidsgiverne hennes, Herr og Fru Niven (Colin Firth og Olivia Colman), deltar på en lunsj for å feire forlovelsen mellom naboens sønn Paul og en Emma Hobday. I nesten syv år har Jane og Paul (Josh O'Connor, kjent fra The Crown) vært kjærester. I likhet med Herr og Fru Nivens tilhører Paul Englands gamle aristokrati, mens Jane ble foreldreløs ved fødselen og tilhører arbeiderklassen. Med huset beleilig tomt, kan de to endelig møtes på Pauls soverom for første gang. I dag blir deres siste som elskere. Det er også dagen som vil markere begynnelsen på Janes transformasjon, når historien utspiller seg gjennom timer med hemmelig lidenskap. Basert på en bok av Graham Swift, med et manus av Alice Birch (Normal People).

1960s superstar fashion model Twiggy and Broadway dancing star Tommy Tune headline Ken Russel's lovingly comic homage to the Hollywood musicals of the 1930s in The Boy Friend. When the star of an English stage musical twists her ankle seconds before the curtain goes up, shy, young assistant stage manager Polly (Twiggy) takes her place. Now, the show goes on as Polly sings and dances her way through a kaleidoscope of psychedelic interpretations of choreographer Busby Berkeley's classic musical numbers.
