Canadiske Richard Hannay er på besøk i London. Etter en kveld på varieté møter han Annabella, som hevder at hun blir bli forfulgt av hemmelige agenter. Han tilbyr seg å følge henne hjem. Senere på natten blir Annabella drept. Hannay vil ikke bli tatt av politiet for drapet, men bestemmer seg for å prøve å finne morderen selv.
