Etter rundt 250 år med fred i Japan var samuraikrigerne på midten av 1800-tallet fattige. Mange forlot derfor sine herrer for å bli omstreifende roniner. Mokunoshin Tsuzuki er en slik samurai. Han bor alene i en landsby der han hjelper bøndene med å dyrke jordene sine. En dag kommer en gruppe lovløse sverdmenn inn i landsbyen.
