Basert på den inspirerende, sanne historien om baseballfenomenet Rickey Hill. Rickey er sønn av en småbyomreisende pastor (Dennis Quaid), og viser et ekstraordinært talent for baseball til tross for at han vokste opp med en ryggmargssykdom. Faren hans fraråder Rickey å spille baseball for å beskytte ham mot skader og for å få ham til å følge i fotsporene hans som predikant.
